October marks five years since our organisation was established. It has also been 18 months since we welcomed our first full-time Chief Executive, and 12 months since our Communications and Engagement Manager joined the team. These milestones give us a chance to reflect on how CGF has grown and, more importantly, the work we can now do alongside our member associations.

In this issue, applications are open for the next round of CGF Scholarships for 2026, and we welcome the New Zealand Stonemasons Association to our membership. You will also find practical workplace wellbeing resources, an opportunity to register your interest in 2027 governance training, and a reminder about the Real Leadership: Tradies Tour.

CGF Scholarships - now open

Applications are open for the second round of CGF Scholarships for 2026. These scholarships support learning and projects that build capability, leadership and career pathways across the construction sector. Applications close on 20 October 2026.

Two opportunities are available:

1. Impact Scholarships: up to $10,000 for research, innovation and sector improvement projects with the potential to benefit the wider industry.

2. General Scholarships: up to $3,000 for construction related education or training beyond NZQA Level 4. Examples include business, leadership, governance, management and specialist technical training.

Welcome to CGF, New Zealand Stonemasons Association

We are pleased to welcome the New Zealand Stonemasons Association (NZSMA) as a new CGF member. Established by stonemasons from across the country, NZSMA brings together craftspeople and businesses committed to high standards of workmanship and the future of their trade. 

Through training, practical guidance and a collective voice for specialist stonemasonry, the association helps strengthen this skilled trade. Read our introduction to learn more about NZSMA and the people behind its work. 

Workplace wellbeing and culture: Helping your team thrive

When people feel valued, respected and supported at work, they are more likely to enjoy their jobs and contribute their best. A positive workplace culture can also help teams stay motivated and productive.

Small, consistent actions can make a difference: listen to your team, communicate openly, recognise good work and make space for wellbeing. The Employer Toolkit’s Workplace Wellbeing and Culture section offers practical guidance on these steps, along with resources on communication and buddy systems.

Reminder: Real Leadership: Tradies Tour

CGF has partnered with Roar Coaching to bring the Real Leadership: Tradies Tour to centres across New Zealand this October and November.

Designed for trade business owners, team leaders and construction professionals who lead people or are preparing to do so, this one day workshop covers practical skills participants can use straight away. These include communicating clearly, giving useful feedback, building stronger team relationships and delegating with confidence.

CGF is funding 50% of the course fee for the first 60 eligible registrations from members of CGF member associations. This reduces the price from $595 + GST to $297.50 + GST per person. Participants will receive a Certificate of Learning; they should check their own professional development requirements before claiming points.

Workshops are scheduled in Hamilton, Christchurch, Wellington, Nelson, Dunedin and Queenstown from 29 October to 26 November 2026. The Hamilton tradies workshop is currently sold out. Please share this opportunity with eligible members and employer networks, and encourage them to check the latest availability when booking

Governance Essentials: Register your interest for 2027

The Governance Essentials programme is fully booked for 2026. This one-day intensive course helps directors, trustees and emerging leaders strengthen their governance knowledge and skills.

We are now welcoming enquiries for the 2027 programme. Dates are still being confirmed, so register your interest to hear when the next courses are announced.
