The construction sector continues to navigate a period of significant change, with important regulatory reforms, workforce development initiatives, and capability-building projects progressing across the industry.

In this month's update, we provide an overview of active CGF-funded projects currently underway, highlight the next Governance Essentials programme, share the latest MBIE Building System Reform webinar recording, and introduce a valuable new resource available to support employers and their teams. As always, thank you to our member associations and wider industry partners for your ongoing collaboration and support.

Active CGF-Funded Projects Delivering Sector Impact

CGF continues to invest in projects that strengthen capability, lift professional standards, and support the long-term sustainability of New Zealand's construction sector. Several funded initiatives are currently underway, with many expected to be completed over the coming months.

Current active projects include:

1. Architectural Designers New Zealand (ADNZ) – Pathway to Professional Programme

   Developing clear career pathways and supporting increased competence and capability across the architectural design profession.

2. FloorNZ – Master Floorer Programme

   Creating a structured training pathway to recognise and develop excellence within the flooring sector.

3. Glass and Glazing Institute (GGI) – Advanced Technical Glazing Training Delivery

   Expanding access to specialist training to support workforce capability and technical excellence within the glazing industry.

4. Master Brick and Blocklayers Association (MBBA) – Standards and Brick Veneer Best Practice Guide Update

   Reviewing and updating industry standards and best practice guidance to ensure resources remain current and relevant.

5. New Zealand Green Building Council (NZGBC) – Homestar Training

   Delivering training to support greater understanding and adoption of sustainable building practices across the sector.

6. Leadership Simulation Centre training, Master Builders Victoria, Melbourne – Leadership Training
   Providing construction leaders with practical, immersive training to strengthen leadership capability, communication skills, and conflict resolution.

Governance Training – A Few Places Still Available

The popular Governance Essentials programme is a one-day intensive course designed for directors, trustees, and emerging leaders looking to strengthen their governance capability.

Registrations are now open for the next intake, taking place on Wednesday 28 October 2026 at Rydges Wellington Airport. With only a few places remaining, we encourage interested members to secure their place early.

MBIE Building System Reform Update – Webinar Recording Available

On 17 June 2026, the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) presented an update on the Government's Building System Reform Work Programme.

The programme aims to create a more efficient, proportionate, and accountable building system with fewer regulatory barriers, supporting both housing growth and wider economic development.

For those who were unable to attend the live webinar, a recording is now available via the link below.

Changes already introduced by the Government include:

• Overseas building products

• Granny flats

• Building inspection KPIs

Areas currently being progressed by MBIE include:

• Earthquake-prone buildings

• Liability rule changes

• Warranties and indemnities

• Self-certification for plumbers and drainlayers

• Building Consent Authority (BCA) consolidation

• Building research

• Strengthening occupational licensing

• Self-certification for entire residential builds

• Solar and sustainability initiatives

New Resource coming – Employer Toolkit Website

Thank you to those member associations who participated in our recent survey on the future of the Employer Toolkit website. 

The feedback received was overwhelmingly supportive, with members indicating that they see ongoing value in retaining this resource. As a result, CGF will rebrand the website and maintain it to ensure the information remains current and relevant for CGF members. 

Keep an eye out for the revamped website coming in August. You are encouraged to share and use these practical resources with your members.
