New industry resources, upcoming events, training opportunities and ConstrucTrend progress

As the sector continues to navigate a challenging year, collaboration, capability and practical support remain more important than ever.

On 30 April, CGF held its 2026 Annual General Meeting, bringing together members both in person and online. The strong turnout reflected the continued engagement across our network and a shared commitment to strengthening the construction sector.

In this month’s update, we share highlights from the AGM, a valuable new workforce support toolkit, progress on ConstrucTrend 2026, strong engagement with our Business Mentors partnership, upcoming member events, and governance training opportunities.

CGF 2026 Annual General Meeting

CGF held its 2026 Annual General Meeting on 30 April in a hybrid format, with members, Board and management attending in Wellington, alongside others joining remotely.

Board Chair Kieren Mallon and Chief Executive Brian Dillon reflected on 2025 as a milestone year for the organisation. Key highlights included the adoption of an updated constitution, followed by a name change and new brand launch.

There was also a significant increase in activity across CGF’s funding programmes. This included the continuation of governance training and scholarships, alongside the introduction of new initiatives such as the partnership with Business Mentors New Zealand. A number of projects were supported throughout the year, all focused on strengthening capability across the construction sector.

Members considered and voted on several remits, ensuring the constitution remains current and fit for purpose.

It was encouraging to see strong member participation, and we look forward to continuing this momentum in the year ahead.

NEW RESOURCE

Pastoral Care & Worker Support Practice Toolkit

Looking after your people has never been more important. For business owners, site managers and team leaders, supporting workforce wellbeing is now a core part of running a successful business.

CGF is pleased to share this practical resource developed by ConCOVE Tūhura and Waihanga Ara Rau. It addresses one of the sector’s key challenges: building a skilled, inclusive and resilient workforce.

The toolkit highlights how effective pastoral care and wraparound support can improve wellbeing, retention and productivity.

Four practical resources are available:

1. Summary Report – key findings and capability gaps

2. Insights Report – sector evidence and six priorities for change

3. Roadmap for Industry – practical actions for employers and training providers

4. Worker Support Toolkit – ready-to-use guidance for supporting workers

Together, these resources provide a practical pathway for stronger workplaces and better outcomes across the sector.

Members are encouraged to use these resources and share them with their networks.

ConstrucTrend 2026 Update

Thank you to the member associations who have already expressed interest in participating in ConstrucTrend 2026.

The 2025 pilot report demonstrated the value of richer workforce data to help guide industry conversations and future training priorities.

It is likely that the 2026 report will again focus on the same sectors: carpentry, electrical, and plumbing, gasfitting and drainlaying. CGF is pleased to confirm that Master Plumbers has indicated its interest in participating again this year.

Planning for the next phase begins next month, with the aim of completing the next survey by the end of August.

Business Mentors Partnership Update

Thank you to all member associations who supported the final 2026 funding intake for Business Mentors NZ.

We are pleased to report that 79 registrations were received in April 2026.

Registrations from CGF member associations included:

• National Kitchen & Bathroom Association (NKBA) – 13

• NAWIC – 12

• NZ Certified Builders (NZCB) – 9

Feedback from participants has been highly positive, reinforcing the value of this partnership in supporting business capability across the sector.

Member Event: Save the Date

Earlier this year, CGF hosted its first in-person Member Leadership Forum, bringing together all 17 member associations in one room.

The strength of collaboration and positive feedback confirmed there is real value in continuing these events.

CGF is now planning a second forum for Wednesday 30 September 2026, shaped by member suggestions and recommended topics.

We are currently confirming speakers, venue details and the draft agenda. Further information will be shared soon.

Training Opportunities

Chairperson Training – a few spots left

A small number of places remain for the CGF Chairperson Training Course on Monday 27 July, Auckland.

Delivered by governance specialist Richard Westlake, the programme is designed specifically for those who work with board Chairs, including Chief Executives, Executive Directors, Board Directors, and those considering a future role as Chair. This course has a practical focus on board leadership, performance and decision-making.

The popular Governance Essentials is a one-day intensive programme for directors, trustees, and emerging leaders. We are now taking registrations for our next intake being Wednesday 28th October 2026 at Rydges Wellington Airport.
